Hypermobility
Hypermobility is the excessive movement of the joint. Hypermobility is a connective tissue disorder that can also affect tendon, organs and skin. There are some specific genetic conditions such as Marfan Syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome that cause hypermobility. Other times it accompanies a neurological condition (ex, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down’s syndrome and Cerebral palsy), or is due to a repeated injury to an area. Children with hypermobility are more prone to injury and chronic pain, because the hypermobility causes their muscles to have to work harder to stabilize their joints, thus fatiguing faster than their peers with stable joints.
What are signs your child may have hypermobility
- Unstable and/or excessive movement of a joint
- Frequent injuries such as sprains, subluxations, etc.
- Poor posture when sitting and/or standing
- Long term joint pain
- Difficulty understanding where their body is in space (ie, proprioception)
- May present with stomach and digestive problems
- May present with bladder and bowel problems.
This is not an exhaustive list. Please contact our clinic for more information.
